Pit bikes are similar to small versions of motocross bikes. The characteristic feature of pit bikes is their ability to be used by both children and adults for serious races.

What is a Pit Bike?

In fact, a pit bike is a separate type of mini motorcycle that has emerged. The history of the emergence of this type begins with a simple bicycle. At race tracks, staff or even racers themselves used compact bicycles for faster movement in the pit stop area. Bicycles with small wheels and frame size, which could easily fit into the service box, were used. From the moment mini bikes appeared on the market, these small bicycles began to lose their popularity, giving way in terms of saved time to lively compact motorcycles. Soon, the vector of development of this transport was increasingly focused on compactness (easy to transport in regular trailers) and good dynamics. Also, for service on motocross tracks, pit bikes adapted to off-road appeared. Even greater impetus was given by the fact that both children and adults could use one motorcycle, which due to its size was suitable for both.

Pit Bike Features

It is worth noting that the possibility of using pit bikes by both adults and children arose due to the extended wheelbase. However, some models can be even smaller, so they will be more suitable for children due to the uncomfortable seating position, in which an adult rider will be in a monkey-like posture. Legendary Honda Z250 Mini Trail, also known as Honda Monkey, had such dimensions due to the same uncomfortable seating for an adult rider on such a small bike.

When choosing the size of the wheel discs, it is necessary to remember that there is a wide choice of models of this type of motorcycles, and the diameter of the wheels varies from 12' to 17'. In this case, it is necessary to roughly determine the purpose of purchasing the motorcycle and choose the necessary diameter according to the needs.

The main feature is the type of engine - pit bikes mostly use engines with a horizontal cylinder arrangement. This type of engines was called 'Honda Cub'.

How to Choose a Pit Bike?

The modern popularity of pit bikes has divided production into two camps. There are training models for beginners, with standard cross-country parameters - such as a miniature version of cross bikes. Such models include Yamaha (TT-R50E, TT-R110E), Honda (CRF110F, CRF70F), and Suzuki (DR-Z70, DR-Z110). They are perfect for both adults and children in the learning phase of motorcycle control or just for fun.

The second option for buying is for serious motorsport. In this case, the market is unlikely to offer you a motorcycle with parameters close to racing. Buying ready-made models will be more suitable for regular training and exploring the track, but later, to overcome opponents, you will have to think about assembling your own pit bike. It is precisely for competitions that a motorcycle with appropriate characteristics and a comfortable, correct rider seating position will be needed. This option will not be cheap, and may also require you to involve professionals and designers to assemble a bike of the proper level. As a project base, models such as Kawasaki KLX110, Suzuki DRZ110, and Honda CRF70F are often used.

Useful Information

It should be noted that a pit bike cannot be used on public roads. For driving this type of motorcycles, you do not need a specific category of driver's license, as well as vehicle registration and documents for it. But there is a separate sport - motocross for pit bikes. If you need to improve your driving skills, you can always turn to professional instructors at motorcycle schools for help.
