Useful Information about Cross Bikes
Motocross motorcycles appeared not so long ago. The desire for other intense sensations from piloting motorcycles led pilots to the idea of off-road racing, i.e., motocross.
By their own efforts, enthusiasts transformed a “classic road bike” into a racing all-terrain vehicle, as simplifying the structure as much as possible to lighten the bike and achieve more confident control and increased structural reliability. Everything unnecessary was removed from the motorcycle for racing among a plethora of competitors - bulky lights and turn signals were removed from the structure, decorative plates and other design elements, as well as luggage racks and other passenger conveniences, were removed, as motocross is designed for a single rider, which is more sensible and safe.
With the popularization of motocross, motorcycle manufacturers came up with the idea of producing ready-made bikes of the "motocross" class, characterized by small dimensions compared to classic motorcycles, low weight, good reliability, complemented by excellent maneuverability.
In the end, motocross bikes became a separate type of motorcycles, which, evolving from a regular road bike, received long-travel suspension and swingarm, sturdy and reliable construction, and a nimble powerful engine. They also removed the electric starter, replacing it with a simple kickstarter, which is entirely sufficient for this type of motorcycle. The battery was also removed - in this case, a small and lightweight battery is sufficient, which is much better for racing on the track than a heavy battery that takes up a lot of useful space in the small volume of the bike frame.
Features of Modern Crossbike Design
Modern manufacturers of this type of motorcycle take the design and equipment very seriously, which will be the feature of the model and will distinguish it among many others. Mainly, the emphasis is on reliability and power of the bike since its design is much less important for other purposes.
General differences of motocross motorcycles from other types:
- absence of headlights and turn signals
- mirrors and numbers are removed from the structure
- absence of a battery or its small dimensions
- kickstarter instead of electric starter for ignition
- large diameter wheels
- wheels usually on spoked rims
- tires with aggressive tread for better control
- suspension - reliable, sturdy, and dynamic
What to Look for When You Want a Motocross?
These bikes are relatively inexpensive, and they may come with a pair of motocross tires or other bonuses. It is worth paying attention to the quality of assembly and reliability of the construction - the simpler it is, the more reliable it should be. The main manufacturers in the motocross bike market are Japanese manufacturers Honda (CRF R series models), Kawasaki (KX series models), Suzuki (RM lineup), and Yamaha (YZ series), as well as Austrian KTM SX series and other more or less well-known reliable manufacturers. Proper attention should be paid to the bike's engine - for professionals, it is worth choosing models based on agile, powerful engines. A novice or enthusiast will be suitable for a motorcycle with a volume of about 125 cubic centimeters. Similarly, for motocross, a two-stroke engine is better suited due to its simplicity, higher power, and high revs. Despite all these features, two-strokes are also cheaper than four-strokes, which are inferior to them in reliability and durability.
