What is a Motard?
The word 'motard' itself is from French, meaning 'motorcyclist'. When it comes to one of the types of motorcycles, a motard is a type of urban bike. This type is based on 'enduro' or 'cross' bikes. There are many similarities between them, but the distinctive feature of a motard is that it is an urban off-road vehicle. It's comfortable to ride in the city, but it can also handle off-road conditions. Its ability to navigate obstacles allows for smooth rides over urban terrain - potholes, curbs, and bumpy roads. This type of motorcycle is often called a 'supermoto' due to its dual-purpose nature and great capabilities.
What are the features of a 'supermoto'?
The main feature of motards is their wheelbase. All bikes of this type are equipped with 17-inch spoke wheel discs. Another distinctive feature of the wheels is the installation of smooth road tires instead of knobby tires, which are not ideal for city riding and some off-road conditions. Because of the standardized wheel size of 432mm, motards have a wide range of tire modification options. The market offers a huge selection, and everyone can find suitable tires for their bike's needs.
Another characteristic feature is the large suspension travel, which increases comfort while riding. The seat height of these bikes is also relatively high. The minimum seat height does not drop below approximately 75-80 cm, which may be uncomfortable for taller riders. In this case, special lowering kits can be purchased for this type of bike to address the issue.
What is a Motard used for?
First and foremost, this type of motorcycle was used by racers to participate in races on relatively small tracks with many turns and challenging sections. The bike's capabilities allowed them to navigate these with ease, so supermoto racing gained popularity. Additionally, due to their excellent power-to-weight ratio and nimble handling, motards can be used for stunt riding.
However, if you are a novice in the world of motorcycling, it is advisable to seek assistance from riding schools listed on the page, and perhaps acquire the necessary skills and assistance in obtaining the necessary documents for a driver's license.
Which bike to choose?
If you are determined to ride a motard, you should consider the following factors to choose the most suitable model:
- Choose the seat height or ensure its adjustability
- Select the required engine power
- Make sure that the suspension of the model suits your needs
- Select the tire set that best fits your needs
Generally, the price for good models starts from $2500-3000. It is worth highlighting models that have been favored by many motorcycle enthusiasts. Among them are Japanese models like Suzuki (DR-Z 400 SM and 250sb), Yamaha (XT660X and WR450F), Kawasaki D-Tracker, and Honda (XR400 SM, FMX 650). Other manufacturers to consider include Aprilia SXV, Husqvarna SM, KTM 450smr, BM Motard 200, and BMW G650 X.
